Energy-efficient sealingfor windows

Window sealing

Window sealing within a perforated window facade or a ribbon facade plays an important role in the planning process. The type of window sealing must be adapted to the respective building type, the sealing system, the aesthetics and the design of the facade. Especially for residential buildings with low energy requirements or passive houses, sealing the construction connection joints for windows and external doors is extremely important in order to avoid subsequent energy loss. These types of buildings are nowadays checked for leaks using a blower door test before the actual interior work begins. This makes it possible to determine whether there are any leaks in the building envelope that would otherwise lead to high energy losses later on.

Window sealing for perforated window facades

With a punched window, the window is inserted into a hole in the solid masonry. As a rule, joint widths of 10 – 20 mm up to a maximum of 50 mm are found here. With a punched window façade, the individual elements are sealed all around the building structure. Depending on the type of building (old/new building, ETICS, clinker brick façade, timber façade, etc.) or special building connections, this can be done with sealing film systems, compressed sealing tapes or strips, foam and/or sprayable sealants.

Window sealing for strip facades

The window sealing of ribbon facades takes place above and below the window elements. The individual window elements are connected to each other directly or indirectly. Depending on the profile manufacturer, structural profiles are required to connect the individual window elements from a certain size of window strip. The processing guidelines of the profile manufacturers document exactly how the individual windows must be connected and sealed. The sealing all round follows the classic perforated window sealing. If a facade has been planned with an ETIC system, film systems that can be plastered over are usually used.
